Will soon sea-trial a 288 with twin 4.3 merc (has gen + AC).
For the test I anticipate:
3 on board
full water
2/3 fuel
totally clean hull and props (no antifoul - boat is stored on the hard).

Would users of similar 288/4.3 care to suggest the speeds I should see at, say 3000, 3500 and 4000 rpm??

Are the installed Four Winns speed dials in the dash very accurate for this purpose?
[There is GPS on the plotter to monitor as well].

Not sure what year your boat is but if this its not a 2006, I am sure it will be easy enough to find.

Refer to page 44 of the odd at the link above.

Happy shopping!

thanks - I have the 2004 fast facts and that says I should see 31mph at 3500. From the online reviews that seems very optimistic even for a light boat.
Still - if it is anywhere near that on the day I'll be very happy.

Any similar 288/4.3 owners out there care to comment?

Your not going to like the performance of the 4.3's. I have twin 5.0 270hp and it's a load to get on plane with 4-5 people on board

I would agree. I have a 298V with 5.0's and they are not enough and my boat only weighs a little more than the 288V. Are you overseas?

Well that was a nice surprise..... :D

80% fuel. 100% water. 4 people on board with a fair bit of gear. Nice calm sea.
Up onto the plane quicker than I thought with no tabs.
27 mph @ 3500
40 mph at WOT
GPS data.

So only a few mph less than the factory data. (Factory WOT is 40mph to 43mph).
The boat was very heavy and is about to go in for a much needed service, but still gave great numbers.
Happy days!

I believe your numbers are good. We have same hull minus gen. w/4.3 Volvo duoprops, tanks 3/4 full, six adults, three small children and she climbs right out of the water. I've heard that the same boat with 5.0's are more sluggish and tend to dig themselves into a hole. Not being one to open up the throttles, I don't recall having to bury the throttles to get up on plane. Very happy with the 4.3's but must admit I was a little leery before the purchase. As I recall, as our boat is in heated storage in Michigan (US), I could get 25-27 mph at 3200 rpm which is our ideal cruising speed with my wife and I but a full compliment of water, fuel and supplies for a two week cruise in Lake Huron's North Channel. If you have a chance, check this area out on line...absolutely gorgeous, unsalted and shark free. :D Not familiar with the waters "down under" but I'm sure they are delightful. Please feel free to send any questions as even though I do not profess to be an expert with the 288's, but have learned much after one season and still learning.

thanks Seahorse. She is just back from re-fit, all mechanicals have had a full service. Will be interesting to see how she runs - should be a little sweeter. Will post the numbers.
In Force 5 coming home the other day we were maintaining 27mph at 3800 rpm but it was a little rough so 25mph at 3500 seemed a bit more comfortable. Just waiting for a silky smooth day...

weekend update.
75% fuel. 6 adults. 120kg of water. Full days supplies etc.
Onto the plane very easily with no delay. 30mph cruising at 3900 rpm in moderate chop and 10-12 kts of wind.
Will try a bit slower to gain some economy - we seemed to be overtaking everyone on the same route.

For what its worth - According to the performance data from the Four Winns link posted above, your boat at 3500 RPM should have a speed of 31 MPH consuming 20 GPH which gives you a miles per gallon fuel consumption of 1.55. Now at 4000 RPM your boat should show a speed of 36 MPH and consume 26 GPH which gives you a miles per gallon of 1.38. Of course this data depends on a lot of variables, but I'd suggest your better fuel consumption is closer to 3500 RPM vs 4000 RPM's and your 4.3's may be happier in the long run being ran closer to 3500 RPM.

At 3500 RPM, is your 288 fully on plane? If not maybe you would need to increase the rpm above 3500 RPM.

I was curious and looked on our 328 Vista's numbers from the same link. At 3500 RPM our 328 should have a speed of 32 MPH, and burn 25 GPH which gives us a miles per gallon of 1.28.

Enjoy your boat.

Mike.

How did you have her trimmed (out drives and tabs), and was that speed from your GPS?
