I have a 1988 sundowner project. Starter is dead, Any tips on removal/ adequate access to bolts to break them loose.
part 2. The boat has a alarm system in it. Not sure where it connects or what it alarms. Did these boats come with alarms?
Thanks for any and all help!

Well get prepared to get a bit beat up because you will have to squeeze yourself in next to the engine the bolts go up into the block, there are 2, I think they are 9/16th if I recall correctly. If its the newer smaller starter they are about 10 lbs but the old large Delco style direct drive starter are HEAVY like 20 lbs. I've done that job like 3 times over the years. I use an old seat cushion to lie on and move the battery out of the way. Make sure to disconnect the neg cable first. I now use the ARCO permanent magnet gear reduction units they are much lighter easier to install and crank it over faster. You must use their bolts though.

this is a pic of the old style starter, these use a front brace on the 4.3s, the V8 may also have it, the smaller ones do not need it.

ARCO PMGR starter installed

Good luck
the alarm is probably for low oil pressure or high water temp

Thanks Lou, I had already pulled all of the above for access and cleaning. ( The boat was free on CL). I got the starter out. Ibvb was just trying to use a 1/2 " drive and ended up using a 3/8" . It is out now. Bench test up next.
