Post subject:  oil filter re- location

Can any one tell me if there is a remote oil filter setup and if so where can I find one. My boat is a 1999 220h and the oil filter is on the port side down near the bottom of the block like most G.M. 5.7 engines. Filter is very hard to get at and would like to remedy this problem. Thanks for your help.

It being a 5.7L GM Block I would think you could use the same one they used on some Chevy Trucks? WHen I worked in the Automotive field I know it was pretty common to have a remote mount filter on some of the GM trucks. THe only one I can remember for sure is Chevy S-10 Blazer say about a 1993 with a 4.3L V6. Ant the 4.3L is actuall almost identical block to the 5.7L with the last two cylinders cut off. SO this might work with a little creativity on your part.

Remote filters were standard fit on later engines, the filter head is attached to the port riser using the 2 front bolts. I bought a VP remote filter kit for by previous 1999 5.7; it made access to the filter much easier. I am sure someone in the US would supply a cheaper aftermarket equivalent; in the UK it was just easier for me to get hold of the VP one.

I was going to suggest an aftermarket source, it should work with the block. Any high performance place should be able to supply one, Summit or Jegs come to mind.

If you get stuck finding one, the VP part number was 3860449; the advantage of it is that the remote housing has the mounting holes in it already, so there's no mucking about adapting brackets/ drilling holes etc. The disadvantage is almost certainly the cost compared to aftermarket ones!

Thanks to every one for the help. Ilooked at Summit performance parts and every remote filter setup said it was not for marine use and when I found some that were for marine use on the marine supply stores they looked identical to the ones at Summit except for the hoses marine hoses were beefier looking more like high pressure hydraulic lines instead of regular rubber hoses. I wonder if the hoses are the diffrence between marine grade and not.Would the non marine grade work or is it a risk that should be avoided, wish Iknew the diffrence for shure. Can any one help with this please. Thanks again for all the help.

The hoses don't need to be different for marine or automotive applications; there is no spark risk, both are transporting hot oil up to maybe 80 -100 psi or whatever. The VP ones are rubber (at least on the outside) with crimped on end fittings. The end fittings don't even look stainless. On my 2004 engine, the crimps have been removed and screw drive hose clamps fitted by the VP dealer (there was a VP recall as some hoses/ end fittings were parting company and they fitted new end fittings with better formed barbs).
