Battery died...current battery on the boat is Interstate Marine/RV deep cycle. According to the owner, who I just bought the boat from about a month ago, he isn't sure how old it was but has only run the boat once in the last three years. I'm buying a new battery today, just wondering what I should go with? I have the single battery setup currently. Deep cycle isn't necessary is it from what my boat? Thanks again |

There are 2 types of marine batteries, a "starting" battery and a "deep cycle" battery (and actually there's a third type, called, what else, "dual purpose", but I think that's more of a marketing term.) Like with a car versus RV on land, most cars run a starting battery, with higher cold-cranking amps; RVs will have deep cycle batteries to run appliances like refrigerators and TVs for extended periods when you're parked in a campground. If you're using your boat like a car (running electronic accessories like a radio or fish-finder mostly when the motor is running), you're fine with with a starting battery. If, on the other hand, you have a lot of time when you're just floating with the motor off and you're running a high-watt stereo system, or you're running an electric trolling motor, you'd be better off with a deep cycle. Starting batteries will run you around $100 and up; deep cycle or dual purpose will be $150 and higher. Either way, you can significantly extend the life of the battery by disconnecting it when not in use, and even better, connect it to a battery tender (not a trickle charger) to keep it in good shape. |
