Walt Thank you for your Service,

What a great history were you onboard when she almost sank or when she punched through the ice in the Artic?

For the flooding, I was assigned to it but in training elsewhere when it sank. The day I showed up we were testing all the sea water systems and performing a Rx start-up. There was DI water running through every electrical panel (energized) to flush out the salt and dirt. The rudder "saved" the ship, as if the water was 6 inches higher, it would have come over the hatch opening and been well above the capacity of our dewatering abilities. We put to sea approx. 1 month after the sinking for what was supposed to be 3 days of work-up and testing. Unfortunately, we had to report to some brush fire somewhere in the world and made it home about 2 months later.

For the ICEX, I was there...

Our exercises involved Submarine rescue preparedness with the other NATO members. We brought our own toy sub (actually flown in by a C-5). It is the DSRV-2 Avalon and can fit about 20 persons. I didn't actually take a ride in it, but I was the door-man for it's comings and goings as they were attached to my engine room hatch.
