One of the nights we tried sleeping on the boat the forward bilge switch would turn on every 3 mintues. It was so annoying we didnt' sleep. The next morning I pulled up the floor and found the pump. there was no water around....so I disconnected the power to it because it was running off my batteries.

So what do I do? Get a new switch? Get a new bilge pump?

The switches are notorious for failing, either the external ones or the type built into the pump. I'd start with the switch, but keep a spare pump on board for when it eventually fails.

What kind of pump is it? Some of the newer bilge pumps (Rule) are designed to cycle on at some interval to check for water.

"An internal computer chip cycles these pumps on every 2.5 minutes, then quickly shuts them down if no water is detected."

Sound familiar?

I think it is the switch because the light would turn on the switch. It couldn't cycle every 3 minutes like that....it would drain the battery down.

I will let you know what happens.
