Post subject: | Merc or Volvo?? |
Last summer I went to my local FW dealership and was shocked to see that every boat on the showroom floor was powered by a Merc. In the past from what I know FW were solely powered by the Volvo Penta outdrive. Why are they all the sudden going to Merc? I prefer the VP over the Merc any day, and thats one of the reasons I bought a FW. Anyone know? |

I thought we'd beat this horse, but the simple fact is, Merc is better.... now bring on the hate mail! Cap'n Morgan wrote: And for you Mercruiser vs. Volvo combatants, this is how the readers see it. Mercury Marine was named favorite outboard manufacturer and favorite sterndrive manufacturer by Trailer Boats magazine readers in the first-ever Readers Choice Awards this November. Quote: According to Trailer Boats editors, MerCruiser easily won the sterndrive category. “MerCruiser ran away with the category by an overwhelming number of votes, making it very clear that Trailer Boats readers favor the black drives,” the editors wrote in the November/December issue. MerCruiser’s impressive lineup of more than 20 sterndrives includes the popular Alpha One and Bravo series. The offering of optional features like Axius control system and best-in-class SeaCore corrosion protection further sets the MerCruiser brand apart from the competition. Not the most scientific study ever done, but at least it is from actual baoters and not just sales figures and dealer sales speak. Cap'n Morgan wrote: You still have about a month of decent weather here. You just need to take advantage of every nice day. Did you order the boat or just take what Spicer's had coming in ? If you did order it, curious why you picked Mercruiser power over the Volvo ? MdRobins35 wrote: 07H200SS wrote: Now back to your regularly scheduled Merc thread...... LOL! Good one. Spitting back with a "It's a Volvo" is likely to make him spill his beer, and drop his cigarette into the gas he's spraying all over in confusion with a resulting fire and Hollywood explosion. Where as, if the response is "350 Magnum!" or, in my case, "377" he's likely to reply with a "Wow", or a simple grunt of acknowledgment without the catastrophe detailed above. So, understand, I did it for safety sake. ![]() I hope that helps!!! |

FYI. Four Winns has sold many models with Merc and/or Volvo for years. Check the past product info section of the Four Winns website, look at several years and models, you will find both. FW has not and will not switch entirely to Merc in the foreseeable future. PS. Nice job with those quotes Walt ![]() |

When you go to a dealer and see what is on the showroom floor, your looking at what the dealer ordered. Four Winns is a manufacture, they will build whatever is on the order sheet. You want a volvo, order exactly what you want and enjoy. I do prefer the volvo on my current boat compared to the merc I have had in a previous boat. But thats just me. This is just the Ford / Chevy / Dodge debate, or which boat brand is best. Who cares!! |

+1, what you observed was the dealer's preference, not FW's habit or policy. |

I may be wrong, but don't think there is any real difference in the engine for the merc or volvo pent DRIVE....other than one's red and other black. Not saying interchangeable- - so when bubba at the pumps asks the reply is the 5.7 - 350 or whatever....really, who cares since it's personal preference... I ran a merc for the last 10 years and had no complaints. Currently i have the VP drive and have been impressed with it. Main points i like include the quiet shift cone system vs the clang and clunk of the merc...the gravity water seal for the speedo cable (if you have to change a speedo cable you will too - the merc is a beast)...the interior easy impellor swap making it a true simple process. The drawback is the idea of the tilt/trim motor being underwater seems to be an accident waiting to happen, but we will see. Both are good units so pick the color you like |

I've had both....Merc for almost 4 seasons and VP for a few months. Haven't had enough time yet to form a true opinion on the VP but I like it so far. It seems to run quieter and shift more smoothly than the Merc. I have boating friends with both types of engines and drives. The Merc guys swear by the Mercs and the Volvo guys swear by the Volvos. In the end, if you take care of them they'll both last you a long time. |

I have had both on my previous Four Winns. The Volvo set up performed very well and I am probably the only guy that did not have an issue with my OSI drive. We are running Merc with DTS now and I love the smooth shifting and performance. It does appear in our area that Merc may be easier to get serviced. I really think its a Ford - Chevy thing. It seems like a yearly event where this question gets asked. Boating season can't be far away. |

I'm not saying one is better than the other, I'm just this was the first time I've been in the Four Winns Dealer and noticed everything new was Merc. powered. I prefer Volvo over Merc, but just b/c thats what I'm more familiar with. I just thought that Four Winns was exclusive to Volvo. |

Well, that is one of the things that message boards are for, learning. Now you know the whole story. |

I can't believe they put volvo engines in boats. A friend has had a few Volvo cars... I always thought they'd make nice boat anchors one day, but.... hehehhe |
