I have been planning to replace the Sony unit in my my boat. This is the second Sony that I have had and the display often goes out and also it now seems to have one side dead. My thought was to take this connector apart and wire the new Fusion unit into the existing harness but I've encountered a few issues. First of all I for the life of me cannot seem to get this apart. I don't know if it has a defect that has seized it but I'm about ready to snip the wire. It sure would be easier if I could pull the connector apart and rewire the new unit into that. Can you buy a connector like this or is it unique to Sony installs. Just looking for a hint to make my life easier. Give me some ideas.

Pull that red tab all the way out. Should be able to separate then.

Yeah I tried that and in fact pulled the red tab completely off. Stuck a screwdriver in there as well and it's still not coming apart. I'm going to have my electrician buddy at the boat tonight and I'm sure we'll get it apart somehow. I thought maybe I was missing something easy.

Finally got it apart with the help of my electrician friend. We both had trouble still and it ended up that you have to depress the back of the connector as well which is not easy to see. Now on to the rest of the repairs.

The red tab is called a TPA. This stands for Terminal Positive Assurance. It prevent the tab you have to push, from accidentally getting pushed and releasing the connector. So its a two step process. Black tab can be depressed until the TPA is removed.
