I was finally able to order the equipment for my stereo upgrade.

Got the Blue Sea Systems 120A Add-A-Battery Kit
Kenwood KMRM315BT Head Unit - Will probably need to fab some sort of beauty ring around it to make it look nice in place of the old Clarion.
4 Polk Audio DB651 speakers
1 10" Polk MM subwoofer
Polk PA D5000.5 amp to run it all.

Question: I have not ordered wire yet for the dual batter kit as I need to figure out what all I need, where it will go, etc. so I can get the right amount of wire; I plan on getting marine tinned wire, I assume I can use this same wire as power and ground for the amp, correct? (different guage of course)

Battery cable is not very flexible & I'd suggest you use OFC car audio cable in at least 4AWG.
Good work on buying quality speakers.
Do you intend to run the MM in an enclosure, or Free Air/ Infinite Baffle - I'm about to buy one!?

They claim this cable is highly flexible... but we will see, I guess it depends on which is cheaper.

MM will be in a sealed box. They don't recommend it to be ran IB.

All the reviews were good and with everything else I needed to get I could not justify the price of going with the MM or similar speakers. Plush the MM speakers would need a more powerful amp to get the most out of the additional cost. I don't need the whole lake to hear the boat so I'm sure this will be just fine for my needs. I'm excited to get everything installed.

Mounted the DB651s tonight. I know some people like the understated look of white grills, but I love the way these look in the boat. Just seems less outdated looking IMO.

A couple of before and after shots:

I had to drill new holes as the DB651s did not match up with the old Clarion holes. New holes are better than the factory ones...

Here is one of the Clarion speakers I removed. I'm guessing my sound quality is a bout to increase a bit.

These are not wired to the amp yet, I just wanted to go ahead and get them mounted to see how they looked. In the coming weeks I have lots of wiring to do but I will be sure to take pics and update along the way.

10" Polk MM1040dvc. I mounted it to this box before even checking if it would fit where I want it to go. I planned on putting it in the storage area in front of the helm but it won't fit through the opening. :( Looks like I'll be building my own box now.

I've got the sub wired in parallel so the amp will push 400W to it a 2ohm. What's funny is the specs say the sub is rated at 350rms, 700 or 750 peak but on the magnet of the sub it says 400W. I'm sure if I keep my gains down it will handle the 400W fine, plus it's a very good possibility Polk's amp rating is 14.4 at volts anyway.

I just finished putting 4 of the DB651s in mine to replace the factory Sony ones. The old ones looked similar to how your Clarions do. I don't have an amp (yet) and (for now) it's still the stock head unit but I can definitely tell the difference. It's not any louder but it's a MUCH fuller sound with a lot more clarity.

Nice work!
You know your dog is giving you 'that look' because you're a grown man who's just bought a subwoofer. :P

Good to know! I can't wait to get it all finished up.

Ha, they are used to it. There is a 12" sub just out of frame for my office stereo and upstairs is a big ported 15" sub the size of a table. :D

Ohhh Deaf , you should show him your sub woofer in your boat.. Its seriously bad ass. He did an excellent job in building the box and mounting it and holy cow , the sound.

Formulax I put the same speakers in my boat, I love the look and they sound great. I'm contemplating a sub for mine, was thinking about a bazooka tube , easy set up and hook ups.

Custom box was built last night. Now I just need to take it apart apply glue and then seal all the seams internally.

Image

Next step is going to be figuring out how to mount the new head unit. Unlike a car it is just a big open space behind the head unit so there is nothing for the new head unit to mount to. The old Clarion's face screwed directly to the boat. At the moment I am thinking I will get some lexan and then use some angle brackets attached to the side of the deck and then epoxy them to the back of the lexan. Then mount the lexan at the existing holes from the Clarion.

Nice enclosure, but you should've used ply!
Even when sealed with primer/ paint, the MDF will last a couple years at best.
