So, I flushed my engine/outdrive this morning and the water coming out initially was black. Looks like really fine sediment was being flushed out. After a minute or so, the water was clear. The boat has been sitting in my driveway for a few months now. Rust, sediment, or something else? Thoughts? |

Howdy, It might be carbon from the exhaust system. The engine might run a little rich if it's carbed due to the choke or rich from the EFI (although it shouldn't be enough to make black smoke) The carbon might break loose when the water is exhausted thru the y-pipe.... If it was rust, it probably wouldn't be black. I love that picture in your sig.....where is it? |

The picture is at Lake Mohave in one of many such coves up-river. It's pretty awesome this time of year - not so many people and the weather is still great! |

The black stuff sound like what you used to get in old domestic heating systems that had cast iron radiators; it's just another oxide of iron that forms in water ( Magnetite, Fe3O4) Graham |

My service guy at the dealership said not to worry about it - just junk in the system.... Still, it's a little off-putting seeing all that crap coming out. Probably just means I need to use the boat more often! |
