I ordered Sierra's Synthetic Lower Unit Gear Lube and planned on doing a fluid change next week.

Upon research, it looks like this stuff has a limited slip additive in it.

Lube: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/sierra-- ... ch-Results
Fact sheet: ftp://69.2.51.153/pub/MSDS/1896802_Synt ... OilSDS.pdf

Apparently the limited slip additive is bad for cone clutches, although I am not sure why Sierra would put that in their fluid to begin with.

The Sierra interchange says "replaces Volvo 1141679" which is the OEM fluid.

Does anyone run this stuff in their SX outdrive?

I've heard a few stories over on iboats that the Volvo cone clutch system does not like some of the aftermarket gear oils. Problem is you never know which ones will cause trouble. So my feeling would be to send back the Sierra and get the Volvo stuff. Those drives are great but expensive to repair, why take a chance. With a dog clutch drive like an Alpha or Cobra it really doesn't matter, because its either in or out. I use Merc/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Oil in mine because its a good oil and easy to find. The OMC hi vis was always harder to find. Got a local VP dealer, just pick up a few qts. Expensive yes I know but so are repairs!

I ordered the OEM stuff. Not going to gamble with something like this.

I emailed Amsoil and asked them if they have an LS additive in their marine gear oil. They state it’s compatible with Volvo Penta, but so did Sierra and look how that ended up.

You did right. Kinda like all the modern cars with their make specific auto trans fluids and anti freezes.
I do use Merc High Performance gear lube in my OMC Cobra but that’s because my very excellent former mechanic (retired) said it was the best.
Also I use the Merc 25/40 motor oil and filters...

I’m going to use the Amsoil stuff going forward. I think that’s what the prior owner used.

Thanks for the info as I've used Sierra Synthetic for the last 2-3 seasons without an issue in my SX-A. Guess I'll just request VP oil from now on when order my winterizing supplies from local shop.
