Post subject:  No Water to Impeller

I took my boat to the lake the other day and had an overheating problem. I changed the impeller and thermostat and figured all would be good. Not so much, I'm not getting any water to the impeller. I back flushed the line and water was flowing backwards but I'm still not getting water to the impeller with the muffs on. Is there a trick to priming this thing? I put the hose up to input of the impeller and it is pumping water so where else do I look? Its a 99 220 with a 5.7GSi DP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nick

Check the pickup hose on the port side of the out drive. You can see it by an access hole. Mine broke there. Caused same issue as you.

You mentioned recently replacing the impeller.. did you perhaps mistakenly swap the hoses for the inlet and outlet of the raw water sea pump? its a very easy mistake to make, try swapping the hoses @ the pump.

It could be that the O-ring between the outdrive and the transom assembly is shot and sucking air. If you are hooking your hose to the hose connection on the motor and everything is fine, but it overheats with the muffs, I would look at the o-ring. Try dropping it in the water and running it at the ramp. That o-ring should be under water at that time, hence no sucking of air. Put it up on plane and you'll be sucking air and overheating. Worth a shot.
